This is a really nice ceramic piece. It appears to be a homemade piece, crafted by someone who had absolutely no clue how to work with ceramics (or paint for that matter). The front of the base has the head and shoulders of a young lady wearing a wide brimmed, floppy hat. The swirl pattern on either side of her is continued on the back of the piece. Someone with a bit more creative talent could really turn this vase into something special. The inside of the rim has not been cleaned, nor has the bottom. It's rough along all the figural lines and really needs a more expert touch than it has received in the past. The mold lines were sanded down and filled (badly). To complete their handiwork, the piece was painted with an incomplete coat of what looks like eggshell white paint. The bottom was not painted at all. The brush strokes are very visible and the paint is scuffed and scratched. It doesn't appear to have any glaze over the paint. With a good cleaning/sanding and some much more artistic paint and glaze work, this would be a really outstanding piece. It's 11" tall, about 12" wide, 4" deep at the widest point and VERY heavy. I keep picturing it with the hat done in sky blue with a powder blue band, and a dove gray pearl-tone finish for the vase itself. Whatever color you pick, it will DEFINITELY look much nicer than the "finish" it has now.
